Beyond Heartbreak to Health
By Emelie Williams
Joanna, a Community Health Alliance patient, recently shared her story with us.
“While growing up I had so many hopes for my future.
I wanted to earn a business degree to use my skills to help others.
In high school I always played sports and got good grades. I hoped I would excel in college.
But when I got to the University of Nevada from my home, I found I was always tired. Like really tired. I was also stiff and just in pain. I hoped it would go away.
Two years ago, I had had enough and sought help. I found out I have RA – rheumatoid arthritis.
I thought I couldn’t afford to go to the doctor and still go to school. I hoped I would not have to drop out. The pain, exhaustion and worry were taking a toll on me. I had a goal – to finish my undergraduate degree.
A friend told me about the Community Health Alliance. At CHA, medication was affordable, doctor visits were reassuring, the professionals in behavioral health helped me talk through the worry of coping with what will be a life-long condition. Now with CHA services and their donors’ support, my overall health is better.
Guess what? I graduated in December! I am ready to take on the world.”
Joanna’s health improved because people like you have a steadfast belief that addressing health and dental needs are essential.
