Dr. Barton joined Community Health Alliance in August 2011 after completing her post-graduate training in Michigan. She assumed the role of co-Medical Director the following year and in 2018 became CHA’s Chief Medical Officer.
With no formal or family ties to Nevada, she lived in Eastern Oregon for several years after college working as an Americorps VISTA volunteer and fell in love with the high desert landscape. Originally from Chicago, she completed her first two years of medical school in Missouri and her last two years of clinical rotations in Phoenix, Arizona. After moving to the Detroit area for residency, she and her family were eager to return west. As a National Health Service Corps (NHSC) scholar looking to practice in a federally qualified health center, Reno and HAWC (now Community Health Alliance) offered an opportunity to practice the kind of medicine she wanted in an ideal location.
A history major in college, she decided on a career in medicine several years after graduation and returned to school to complete pre-med requirements prior to entering medical school in 2003. In 2007, she entered Beaumont’s Family Medicine Residency where she served as Chief Resident in her final year. Graduating in 2010, she received the James Langeveld, M.D. Teaching Award, Resident Teacher of the Year. She stayed with Beaumont for an additional year to complete a geriatric fellowship prior to joining CHA. She has co-authored an article in the International Journal of Family Medicine titled “Adherence to Medications after Hospital Discharge in the Elderly.”
Dr. Barton enjoys many of the outdoor activities the Sierra afford, but her favorites are running, climbing, hiking, and skiing with her husband and son. She loves travel, both at home and abroad, and looks forward to exploring Nevada in years to come.
