Finding Her Way Back: How Integrated Behavioral Health Helps Children Thrive

When Everyday Moments Become Milestones

For a child, returning to school can be a big accomplishment. Going grocery shopping with your family might not sound like a milestone—but sometimes, it is.

For one 11-year-old patient at Community Health Alliance, these everyday moments had become increasingly difficult.

Her family noticed that she was struggling with her mental health and that her day-to-day life was changing. She stopped going to school altogether. Activities she once enjoyed with her family became too difficult, including routine trips to the grocery store.

Her mother knew something had changed. What their daughter needed was more than a quick conversation or a routine checkup. She needed compassionate, specialized support.

At Community Health Alliance, behavioral health is part of the care we provide to children and families. By integrating behavioral health with pediatric primary care, our providers can look at the whole child—physical health, emotional well-being, development, family life, and the challenges that may be affecting a child’s ability to thrive.

Following a comprehensive behavioral health evaluation, the patient began treatment for depression.

And gradually, things began to change.

She returned to school.

She began participating in family activities again.

And she once again joined her family for trips to WinCo—something that had once been a normal part of her life.

For her family, these weren’t small victories. They were signs that she was finding her way back to herself.

When everyday moments become milestones

Children don’t always have the words to explain what they’re experiencing. Changes in behavior, school attendance, friendships, sleep, or family involvement can sometimes be signs that a child is struggling emotionally.

That’s why access to behavioral healthcare matters.

When families face barriers to specialty mental health services—including cost, availability, transportation, or long wait times—children can go without the care they need. Integrating behavioral health into primary care helps bring that support closer to where families already receive care.

It also creates an opportunity to recognize concerns earlier and connect children with appropriate treatment and resources.

Most importantly, it reminds children and their families that they don’t have to navigate these challenges alone.

A healthier future starts with seeing the whole child

At Community Health Alliance, we believe every child deserves the opportunity to learn, grow, participate, and simply be a kid.

Sometimes, progress looks like returning to the classroom.

Sometimes, it looks like joining your family at the grocery store.

And sometimes, those ordinary moments are the clearest signs that a child is beginning to feel like themselves again.

For this young patient, treatment helped make those moments possible.

For other children across Northern Nevada, access to integrated pediatric medical and behavioral healthcare could make a similar difference.

Because when we care for the whole child, we’re not just treating a condition—we’re helping children get back to the moments that make childhood meaningful.
