Shopping for Staple Foods

When you go to a grocery store you will find many healthy options along the perimeter of the store, but you can also find some healthy options in the inner aisles. Selecting a few items from the canned, bulk and frozen section means you will have healthy, on-hand options with a longer shelf life. Items like beans, pumpkin puree, lentils, canned tuna or salmon can be very versatile and can be added in to make tacos, salads or soups for extra nutrition. Frozen fruits and vegetables are a great way to have fruit and vegetable options available to throw into dishes or for a quick side. They can be added into soups, pastas, casseroles, smoothies, pancakes or muffins. Frozen fruits and vegetables can also mean quicker meal-prep time since the washing and cutting is already done for you.

Having nutritious canned and frozen staples on hand can help decrease your grocery bill and minimize food waste in the home all while giving you great nutrition.
